From the Beginning of Creation

II Peter 3:3-4, “ . . .knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For since the Fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

One common argument that we encounter today is the ‘ancientness’ of scripture. Surely, after two thousand years, there can no longer be any validity to the Bible? We have so much knowledge and technology now.

That is exactly what Peter was addressing in his second epistle. This was a common argument of his day; all the stories that we have heard about God moving on the earth are ancient history. He is no longer interested in man, if he really ever was? Maybe it’s all just a story? Right?

It is easy to perceive the stories of scripture to be more or less contemporary to one another. But most of the Old Testament stories that are familiar to us were probably like the Middle Ages, or Ancient History to the early church. And like us, they may have had difficulty relating to the culture or lack of technology in the old stories.

Galatians 4:4, “But when the time had fully come, God sent His son,”

II Peter 3:8, “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.”

When we think about it this way, we see that our perspective of time is not part of the equation with God. He encourages us to ‘be ready’. Jesus frequently encouraged us to patience, persistence, and endurance. This idea was echoed throughout the epistles. It is an even greater challenge for our generation, who are accustomed to ‘instant’ everything.

Let’s ask the Lord to give us a heavenly perspective of His timing. And we can trust that we were each also born at just the right time.
